the 1893 Loan, on 31st December 1896, included in the

Assets of the Colony on that date, was $535,546, leaving a

net excess of Assets on General Revenue Account of

Local Audit.

The examination of the Revenue and certain other

Accounts was conducted, under my direction, by the officers

of my Department stationed in the Colony, on the whole with

satisfactory results.

The Local Auditor has furnished me with State-

ments showing the state of the collection of Village Rates,

in which considerable improvement was effected in 1895-6

and 1896-7, and I have been informed that "the Accounts for

"these rates have now been put into such order that, with

"a little care, they can never again fall into the chaotic

"state they were in formerly".

The year of assessment for

these Rates ends on 30th June, and the total arrears out-

standing on 30th June 1897 was $366.04 only.
